At least 109 people had been taken to Tokyo hospitals by Tuesday morning because of injuries sustained in a fall on slippery snow in eastern Japan, the Tokyo Fire Department said.

Injured victims taken to the hospital by 10 a.m. ranged in age from 4 to 92, and none were in critical condition. In neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture, five people were seriously injured and 34 were slightly injured, while in Saitama Prefecture, 12 people were slightly injured.

The Japan Meteorological Service canceled heavy snowfall warnings in nine prefectures, but precipitation in the form of snow and rain continued in some areas in the morning.

Traffic was suspended on some sections of East Japan Railway, and all trains on the Yokohama Line were temporarily halted. Shinkansen trains on the Tokaido Line traveled at reduced speed between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Odawara Station in Kanagawa Prefecture.

All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines canceled about 30 domestic flights, mostly to or from Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

At Shinjuku station in Tokyo, many passengers requested refunds and switched to other train lines. "The train had already been canceled when I arrived at the station. Business negotiations will have to be rescheduled for another day," said a 32-year-old woman who planned to travel to Kofu station in Yamanashi Prefecture for work.
