Otaru is the most romantic city of Japan's northern island, also called the Little Venice. Otaru was built as a commercial center. Retro-style streets are woven into the city like threads of a spider's web.

Otaru is known for its canal decorated with Victorian-style street lamps, aquarium, as well as beer, sushi, arts and crafts - glass and music boxes. In winter, it attracts visitors with its annual festival Snow Light Path Festival (Road of snowy lights).
